Fat Burner Problems
On every supplement, there’s a label that states how it should be used. In the context of thermogenic fat-burners, that label is the most important writing on the bottle.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t pay too much attention to these instructions and instead think they know better about dosages they can handle. The scary looking warnings are also important, but the user focuses on those even less than the directions.
Why is this? Why do people ignore the instructions and go about it in the way they want to? The reasons are simple, yet complex at the same time. There is usually a common denominator though; the unwavering faith people have in their knowledge of the way their own body works.
Here’s a few ways that fat-burners should and should not be used. The reasons vary from simply saving you money, to ensuring you are going about this the healthy way.
More Is Not Better – Dosage is Key
The dosages that these products have stated on the label are there for a reason. Sometimes you will feel the manufacturer has been a little cheap with one or two of the ingredients. However, this is not a reason to take more pills than is stated on the packaging. The reason being that some of the inclusions will be at clinical dosages and therefore not a good idea to double up on.
Thermogenic stimulants are a prime example of ingredients they will put in at full strength, and they are the best example of the ones you don’t want to overdo it on.
Also, you may think you know your body down to the last cell, but it’s rarely the case that you can tell what is happening on a deep level with these ingredients. Taking more than the directed amount could result in counterproductive results, and that really is a pointless waste of money.
Another pragmatic reason for taking the specified dose is the cost. Don’t make it so that you have to purchase the product again sooner than you would have to if you follow the instructions.
Too Many Stimulants is Counterproductive
We mentioned stimulants in the previous section and considering the usual inclusion of one, two or even a few stims in thermogenic products, they deserve their own mention.
Here’s the thing with stimulants: they really only work well if your body has not become too accustomed or tolerant to them and their effects. This is why they should be cycled on and off and also why they should not be overdone.
Aside from the possible uncomfortable side effects of having too many stimulants like caffeine, synephrine, DMAE and so one in your system, they will actually become fairly useless if you use them too much.
This is also tied in with sticking to dosage and not using a supplement in perpetuity. Big coffee drinkers are guilty of this. If you drink more than a cup of coffee every day, then the caffeine in these pills is (a) too much and (b) not going to have an effect anymore. This seems like a contradiction in terms but there is a point that stims can do no more in terms of fat burning or cognitive function, yet have a negative effect.
Research supports the theory that you need to cycle off caffeine and other ingredients like it as well, in order to ‘reset your tolerance levels and make your body sensitive to it again, and thus its beneficial effects.
The rule of thumb we go by is: Every 8 to 12 weeks, come off caffeine/stimulants for 2 weeks.
Worried about withdrawal symptoms? That’s another reason not to live your life by caffeine and stimulants, and indeed use the directed dosages. More than 500mg of caffeine a day is not good for you long term and you will become numb to its effects anyway. Treat stimulants as a tool, not a crutch.
Timing is Everything – Or Is It?
How many times have you read “take on an empty stomach”…or, “take 30 minutes before starting your workout.”?
A lot of people complain that a product makes them feel wretched if they take it first thing on an empty stomach. There’s a way to mitigate this, and it involves taking smaller doses and working up to the recommended dose on the packaging.
If that doesn’t ease the weird feeling after taking them on an empty stomach, then don’t. This isn’t a dosage thing so it’s okay to bend the recommendations to fit your needs. The supplement might not be a hundred per cent effective if you take it after a bit of food but it’s better than fighting with it every morning. Most of the time, just backing off the dose and increasing to the recommended dose over time works.
Most conscientious manufacturers will recommend a cycle by which to use their supplement. If they don’t it’s a good idea to implement one anyway. Not many ingredients in thermogenic fat burners will work if you take them everyday, all year long.
As mentioned earlier, your body starts to tolerate the ingredients in the formula and therefore desensitizes itself to them. For them to be truly effective, the body needs to be sensitive to them to a degree. This means giving yourself a break from them every so often.
Cycling off anything is easier if your ‘on-cycle’ is not too long. It’s also the best way to get punchy effective periods of use. Again, between 8 to 12 weeks seems to be a good period of an on-cycle and two weeks appears to work quite well as the downtime.
You Still have to do Most of the Work
Say what now? Sitting on my backside playing video games while chomping on thermogenic fat-burners won’t turn me into a chiselled natural phenomenon!?
We know you don’t think like that, but you’d be surprised how many people think the product is going to work miracles and they can keep hitting the snacks and avoiding the stairs. We’d wager that at least 1 in 3 people who leave negative reviews of fat-burners fit into this category.
Even taking the most well formulated fat-burner on the planet will only be effective if you are doing most of the work with your diet. Even exercise pales in comparison to controlling how many calories you ingest.
So, why use a fat-burner at all? Same reason you drink a protein shake after lifting weights; as an aid to help you reach your goals. A quality fat burner can burn a few hundred calories extra a day.
say, for example, that you break even with your diet compared with what you burn off naturally (i.e. calories in versus calories out), the fat burner will be the deficit of a few hundred calories. In a couple of weeks, that could be a pound of weight loss. That’s a very simplified example but you can see what these things can be capable of if you are looking after your side of the deal.
Appetite Suppressants and Other Ingredients
Fat burners don’t do just one thing these days. They contain other ingredients for reducing your appetite, partitioning nutrients better (e.g. toward muscle energy and not fat storage), and improving mood and so on.
The point of including these ingredients is to provide additional support for the key thermogenic inclusions. It’s important to realize though that an appetite suppressor – for example – is designed to assist your suppression of junk cravings. It is not an off-switch that will eliminate all desire for snacking.
The reason we say this is that one big mistake is to keep all the junk in the fridge and cupboards and expect the cravings to leave the building first. They will not. If the source of sugary comfort is within reach, the little hunger goblins will light the fire in your belly. Remove the source, and temptation is easier to crush.
The same goes for nutrient partitioning. Give them healthy food to work with and you will get the best results possible.
Mistakes We Have Made
Believe it or not, a lot of this comes from personal experiences and then thinking beyond those to how the issue can develop into a more advanced problem.
Here’s a summary of points to remember with fat burners, and what to do about them:
- Stick to the recommended dose
- Work up to the dose if you feel too sensitive to it in the morning
- Cycle on and off the supplement – don’t take it every day for eternity
- Give the product a chance; put your effort in
- Don’t consume too many stimulants aside from the product; they will minimize the benefits and may cause unwanted effects
The Bottom Line
A fat burner is a really good tool to use in your fat fighting quest. If used correctly it can make a massive difference which can cumulatively equate to pounds of fat loss over the course of the cycle.
