Cellucor Super HD is a fat-burning supplement with a strong nootropic element to it for a cognitive boost.
The international websites were posting the same recipe as the USA website at the time of writing this review. We contacted Cellucor to determine whether that was true as the US version contains some ingredients we know to be illegal in Canada, Australia, UK etc. They confirmed that the US formula was different – as it has Yohimbine and Rauwolfia extracts in them.
Therefore, this review will concentrate on the non-US version of Super HD. The bottle we ordered does indeed have the ‘international’ recipe on the label.
What Is Super HD and How Does it Work?
Super HD has been developed to be more than just a fat-burner. The ingredients included are alleged to have the following general attributes:
- Thermogenic Fat-Burning
- Cognitive (focus/drive) Lift
- Energy Boost
This is a regular thing with fat-burners on the market currently. The idea is that weight loss goals are supported more thoroughly by helping the user’s motivation and actual power levels, rather than just the chemistry of thermogenesis.
Among other selling points the marketing copy states that, “you want to look unbelievable – toned and cut in all the right places.” — this is probably a direct reference to the Yohimbine and Rauwoflia in the USA formula as studies have shown that these ingredients can target areas of stubborn fat, such as love-handles, thighs and buttocks. This doesn’t apply to the non-US label however.
That might be a blessing in disguise though, because while targeted fat loss sounds amazing, those inclusions may have some negative side effects that have not been fully assessed. Hence why they are banned substances in most countries other than the US.
So what does this one have in the formula? Let’s take a look:
|Toothed Clubmoss (for Huperzine A)||2.5 mg||Could increase and maintain acetylcholine (principal neurotransmitter) levels in the brain helping boost memory and other cognitive function|
|Dandelion Root||37.5 mg||May help reduce water retention for more cut and dry physical appearance. Can also assist in detoxification.|
|Caffeine||158 mg||Proven thermogenic fat-burner short term nootropic and energy booster|
|Amla Fruit||37.5 mg||Preliinary evidence suggests this compound can reduce blood glucose. Helps keep cholesterol balanced and reduce triglycerides. Also it has nootropic (cognitive function) properties – increasing feelings of vitality as well. Most studies have used more of a 1000 mg to 3000 mg range. That’s quite a lot more than Super HD contains!|
|Hong hua ji sheng (leafy twig)||20.833 mg||We’ll accept creative suggestions as to what the heck this is!|
|L-Tyrosine||121.75 mg||The precursor to many neurotransmitter hormones like Dopamine – adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinephrine). Therefore L-Tyrosine is another nootropic cognitive enhancer.|
|Roseroot (rhodiola rosea)||60 mg||Yet more mental performance enhancement. Rhodiola Rosea seems to act more in a way to reduce the mental fatigue associated with a day of hard work and exercise.|
|Bitter Orange||33.33 mg||Also known as Citrus Aurantium – this little fruit contains many protoalkaloids. Synephrine is present in high quantities – as is Octopamine in some sources. Synephrine assists weight loss on a thermogenic/metabolic basis and may provide some energy by way of stimulatory properties.|
|Green Tea||20.833 mg||Green Tea contains polyphenols – specifically catechins – which activate thermogenesis via lipid oxidation. Technically it is stimulatory as well though at 20.83 mg in Super HD it may not provide much of either benefit.|
|Fleeceflower Root||20.833 mg||A more exotic name for Japanese Knotweed – which nature has selected to be an abundant source of Resveratrol – the infamous antioxidant and blood pressure reducer. Unlike nature’s most famous source – grapes – Japanese Knotweed does not make a decent wine.|
|Cayenne||15 mg||Hot pepper with the ability to heat up your mitochondrial furnaces and burn more fat. 15 mg though again leaves us going hmmm|
|Niacinamide||10 mg||Vitamin B3 basically. Useful for so many functions thus we’re not about to start listing them. One thing though – experts are divided on whether you should take a 100 times this dose to reap the benefits or whether that would hinder performance. We see Cellucor have aimed for the super conservative end of the spectrum just to ensure it makes no difference!|
|Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (Vitamin B6)||5 mg||See Below|
|Vitamin B12||25 mcg||B6 and B12 again are good base vitamins and are involved in hundreds of bodily functions including weight management.|
Comments on the Recipe
Well, the ingredients themselves – for the most part – are excellent ingredients, but we feel that Cellucor might be missing a crucial link in the chain: Dosage. Take the Green Tea Extract for example; its ability to burn fat is quite well supported scientifically, but at doses of 300 – 500 mg. And Cellucor have put just over 20 mg in Super HD. You would burn more fat waiting for the kettle to boil.
As for the rest of the formula, it’s the same story; some doses are ok but the company may have been too cautious with the rest in our opinion. Odd considering they put Yohimbine in the US blend.
NOTE: The dosages listed on the label are for 1 capsule of Super HD, and the company says that you can take 3 in a day (see their usage guidelines).
Please follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to the letter. On top of those, generally speaking, we’d advise anyone to get a doctor’s opinion if they are: suffering from any medical condition, on medication, pregnant, breastfeeding or just unsure whether they should take a supplement.
The serving advice is for those looking for an extra kick in the morning to take 2 caps and then 1 in the afternoon. If you are sensitive to caffeine and other stimulants, always start small and introduce more once you are aware of your tolerance levels.
it’s hard to say but we didn’t experience any side effects, negative or positive really. The caffeine might cause a bit of unease, nervousness or other caffeine related effect if you take the double morning serving and the afternoon serving.
Be aware though that if you do take 3 caps a day, the whole bottle will last you 20 days.
Pricing and Availability
Canada: roughly $65 CAD for a 60 capsule supply. This is 20 days worth if you take 3 caps a day.
USA: about $40 USD for the same amount, and this will be the version including Yohimbine
United Kingdom: we found a good deal at £17 GBP for 60 caps but the usual is more like £28
Australia: it seems you guys have to make do with the powder drink form which has a similar recipe. It goes for about $45 AUS for a month supply tub. They might have the capsules as well somewhere but we couldn’t find any at the time of writing this.
Conclusion and Recommendations
From the dosages, the product looks rather weak. It is redeemed by the fact you can take more than one capsule a day.
However if you take the maximum of 3 capsules in a day then your supply is going to run out quickly.
